Increase Speed with Resistance Equipment
By Al Rosen Photography by Bernadette Schimnowski Athletes: Allan Rodriguez, Joanna Lewis, Mandy Magnuson, Willie Thomas Athletes can increase stride length, frequency, power and acceleration with the proper training equipment. All athletes, regardless if they are training for sprints or endurance, can benefit from overspeed and speed training.
Agility Ladder - Willy Thomas Heavy Rope Whenever using any resistance training equipment make sure you follow the following rules: Warm up thoroughly with stretching and form running (high knees, heel kicks, power skips, etc.). Do a series of short sprints 10-30 yards prior to using any equipment. Only use weight you can handle (obviously someone with more bodyweight can use more weight) and do a series of short sprints (20 yards). This would apply to the power sled harness, power sled push, weighted vest, heavy rope, and lunges with versa bar. Do not compromise running form (keep back flat, arms extended and drive with the legs). This applys to devices such as resistance trainers, power harness, sled, and parachute. Use a good jumping surface whether you are using the heavy rope, jump rope, or plyo jumps. Never compromise form as improper form can lead to injury. Examples: Versa Cuff, power ball, and medicine ball exercies. Allow sufficient recovery time between sets or intervals. Do not hesitate to consult with a Speed and Conditioning professional.
